Reward Your Team
With a Cruise or a Challenge !
The Sail Training Ship South Passage is a 100 foot (30.5m), gaff rigged schooner. She is a modern ship launched in 1993 but based on the design of the 19th century pilot schooners that operated off the east cost of America. She is sailed in the traditional way. Everything is done manually – there are no winches or mechanical aids. Sails are raised and lowered by hand and just about every activity requires a number of people working together as a team.
For about 300 days a year, South Passage is used by school groups for voyages ranging in duration from one day to seven days. Amongst other things, the students learn to work as a team, develop leadership skills and build life-long friendships.
Many corporate and other groups have used South Passage for team building, as a reward for achieving work goals and for leadership development. We can arrange a voyage for you to suit your needs. For instance, the voyage could be:
- A full day or part of a day (such as a twilight cruise) or an overnight voyage,
- As an opportunity for your staff to socialise and as a reward for achievement,
- As a team building day where staff will be involved in sailing the ship,
- As a competitive day where teams vie against each other to be the best sailors (such as in tacking drills and knot tying competitions).
South Passage can accommodate 24 people on overnight voyages or up to 56 on day sails. We will provide the qualified crew to sail the ship and volunteer watch leaders who can work with your staff in sailing the ship. The day sail cost starts at $3000 (plus GST) on a BYO basis. Voyages cost $150 (plus GST) per person per day, based on a minimum of 20 paying passengers. All meals are provided on voyages.
To maximise the number of school groups we can service, South Passage sails from her home port in Manly (near Brisbane) north to Cairns in the winter and south to Wollongong in summer. This means your booking will need to be at a time when she is close to your offices.
Of course, South Passage is under survey, is registered to sail in Queensland and NSW waters. She carries all the required safety equipment and our crew and volunteers have been trained in its use. We can guarantee you that your voyage will be as safe and as enjoyable as we can make it. However, we cant guarantee the weather. Too much or too little wind may mean the day does not fully meet your expectations.
A day out sailing a traditional ship can be a fantastic experience. Your staff will not become expert sailors in a day but under the guidance of our crew and volunteers will surprise themselves in what they can achieve both as individuals and as a team.
