South Passage operates with three paid crew – a skipper, Sailing Master and cook.
The Skipper is responsible for the safe operation of the ship. He or she must have at least a USL Master Class 4 Ticket that qualifies them to sail a commercial vessel the size of South Passage on offshore waters.
The Sailing Master is second-in-charge on board and must have at least a USL Master Class 5 Ticket as well as a Restricted Coxswain ticket to enable them to operate the South Passage tender for shore excursions.
Both the skipper and sailing master must have current first aid qualifications and one of them must have a MED3 (Marine Engine Driver) certificate. Many of our skippers and sailing masters have qualifications in excess of the minimum requirements.
The Cook manages the ship's galley and works wonders producing nourishing and varied meals for the crew and students often in trying conditions.
We rotate our paid crew regularly and are always on the lookout for people with the appropriate qualifications. Experience sailing fore and aft rigged ships is a great advantage and it is essential that you can relate to young people and a volunteer crew. You must hold a ‘blue card’ to work with young people in Queensland.
For more details of sailing opportunities, contact the office and we will arrange a senior member of our team to talk with you.
